Here's my first EVER knitting project that I use double pointed needles on. I was very intimidated to use them but after watching this a couple of times, I felt confident enough to start. This is just the begining, I can't show the whole thing or even the pattern just yet cause its a gift and that person may or may not be reading. So, for now, this is what it looks like. I love the way it's turning out! The feel of the needles and the feel of the yarn is wonderful, so soft! Perfect for a little head (hint-hint). The yarn is Bernat Cottontots in Blue on size 7 bamboo dpns. The color reminds me of blueberries and I have to stop myself from licking it sometimes. Cause it looks like it would taste good....heh...

First Knitting Project in a LONG time...

I haven't knitted in so long, I was so ready to do something that was quick and easy with instant results. After surfing the many blogs I read daily, I came across this blog with this pattern . He's FABULOUS, btw. Awesome, just what I needed! I was thinking of the cold nights sitting on the soccer field and how this would be perfect. I was also thinking of MM's upcoming trip to Alaska and the fact her birthday fell right into that. So, off to buy yarn! I purchased a few skeins, but for her, I chose black. That's got to match with anything, right? So, with 2 strands in hand and a set of #15 bamboo needles I knitted up this little number:

I can't remember off hand the 2 different yarns I used. I know one was a chunky and the other was a softer. I casted on 15 stitches and s1p, yo, k2tog to make the pattern you see. Did that till it was roughly 20" in length and sewed on 3 buttons. Came out so soft and squishy! Hopefully it's warm and toasty too! A trip to Alaska should confirm that.

I packaged it up yesterday for the mail. She should receive it today. Just in time to leave on Friday.

I will miss it! I have another on the needles though. One in an oatmeal color. That one is in a different textured yarn so I shall see how that one comes out. They knit up so quick, 2-3 hours. Enough time to catch a movie or 2. I bought a couple other colors and good thing cause they are addictive! Instant gratification...

Bad News :: Good News

The bad news is Hancock's is closed forever. New Iberia no longer has a fabric store.

The good news is all the knitting/crochet needles and accessories went on sale for .25 cents a piece! YES!!! That means that even those $20 size 35 circular needles were .25 cents! I loaded up a buggy and got $400 worth of needles for the amazing low price of $12. Now there is no pattern I can't do because I don't have the size needle required. I think I got there just as the sign went up cause i was the only one that was going down the line grabbing one each of everything on the rack and the racks were still full. Good times...

That was yesterday. I got flowers and the guys cooked here at the office. Fried fish, french fries, hush puppies, onions, and white beans and rice. All awesome! This weekend is filled with out of town plans for a soccer tournament which will start tomorrow for us.

New Baby Blanket

Here's a few skeins of the yarn I got from Hancock's on sale:

At first I wasn't sure how they would blend together. But, now, I'm loving these colors!

I planned on using these for a baby blanket for Nicole's baby. I've already started it, it's crocheted. This is the begining of it. I have alot more on this done now than when this picture was taken:

I'm using a "Speed Hook" crochet hook and just like the name of the hook, it's fast! This will be completed in no time. This is my first crochet project and I'm amazed at how easy it is. Knitting is not this fast. I highly recommend for any first time crochet-er, use this needle, it makes learning and understanding fun. Here's a close up:

The pattern is from the Lion Brand Yarn website. They have lots of free patterns. You'll have to sign up but worth if for all the free patterns. You can also search by hook size for patterns. For example, I typed in "speed hook patterns" and every pattern that uses the speed hook came up. Lots of quick and easy crocheting!

Last night Shelby declared it "CRAFT NIGHT"!! With a little christmas music in the background, we cleared off the kitchen table and filled it with tins of string, glue, pom-poms, pretty wrap, magnets and all things crafty. We both did our own pom-pom garlands and she made magnets to pass out to her friends at school. They came out super cute as did our garlands! And to add to that super crafty night, our neighbor came by with a gift of goodies. Pralines, banana bread, rocky road fudge, and M & M/chocolate chip cookies! Can it get any better than that??

Not a very busy weekend. Soccer on Satrurday with a little "death wish" christmas shopping at the mall in Lafayette after. Sunday was quietly spent at home watching movies (Nacho Libre - that was hilarious!), wrapping gifts, and just enjoying being home.

FOG

It has been like this for 3 days. Fog all day and all night. This is a view from my office looking out to the highway 90 that I have to travel. Remember what it looked like on "The Others" everytime Nicole Kidman and her kids would wonder outside of the house? Yea, its kinda like that around here. I'm ready for some SUN to brighten things up a bit and lift this fog. Or, if its going to be this gloomy at least be cold - and cold enough to snow. Its moist, damp, humid, muggy, its like wet air, no christmas weather. SSssIIiiGGggHHhh!!!....well since we don't get the white stuff for winter, at least there's this site to go to and make some while I'm inside avoiding all the murky-ness. Every flake you make sends a donation to the Salvation Army so its a good thing!

Christmas Spirit

I wasn't too much in the christmas spirit this year. Maybe it's because Shelby is getting older and so are the other nieces and nephews we have in the family. All the fun Christmas traditions we had, they are growing out of. Or maybe cause I feel like its a race and I'm making myself rush to the finish line. The finish line being Christmas day. I put up the Christmas tree but not with all the bangs and whistles I would normally. It took me 4 days and I ended up saving away alot of the decorations I would have normally displayed.

Well, last night I heard "O' Tannenbaum" by Vince Guaraldi and for some reason it just put me in the ole Christmas Spirit! I don't know if it was because is sparked a childhood christmas-y feeling of when I would await all year to watch Charlie Brown Christmas and all the magic that the season held or if it has some kind of Grinch-ish heart en-larger, but I needed that CD!

So, for lunch today I went out to get this:

I used this awesomly soft yarn by Baby Bee called Angle Fleece. The color is called Teddybear, it was a beige varegated with pink and blue. It was all knit stich on #10 circular needles, 100 lines across, 200 down. It made a nice 36x36 blanket. It's a simple pattern but because of the size it took me some time to complete but, I wanted a pratical size blanket. I am happy with it. I'd do another one. I'd like to do one for myself!

Ok, so I haven't posted in a while - alright, a few MONTHS!! I've just been really busy and its been hard to try and find the time to commit to this. This whole blog is basically journaling and even when I was younger I couldn't keep up with one. There is alot I still I want to accomplish with this blog and I'm not giving that up. I have the most time here at work and my previous computer really wasn't up to par to posting pics, it froze up everytime I tried to download one. I have a new computer so maybe now it won't feel like such a chore. Maybe this new computer will make it fun! My computer at home could definately keep up but when I am at home, I get caught up with other things to do. So, to catch up with the last blog about quilting those 6in blue jean squares I cut in the summer (no I haven't put those together yet but hopefully posting them will be my motivation to put them together), I give you these photos of how they came out...

Doesn't seem like a big deal, but boy did it take some time to do! I also bought some really pretty flannel to back it. Those 124 are already cut. I guess I could have taken a picture of that to put up but, hey, there's tomorrows post!

Quilting...on a Sunday afternoon

So, Sunday, I decided to do something with the huge stack of un-wearable, un-usable jeans I had in the 3rd bedroom. I have at least 30 pairs that I have been saving to do something crafty with. Mom gave me a really good idea to make a blue jean quilt out of them. Seems pretty easy. Just a bunch of squares and sewing straight lines. Has to be easy for any beginner. I borrowed her rotary blade, cutting mat and 6" square template and got to cutting. I sat on the floor of the living room so I could cut them up while I watched TV. Got some good movies in but when it was all said and done, I cut 124 6" squares. One hundred. Twenty four. Squares. Believe it or not, I am SO sore today! I guess it was the whole sitting on the floor using cutting muscles I haven't in a long time. Its all over sore! Who knew quilting was a full contact hobby. I bet moma is really in shape. I'll post pictures at a later date. There wasn't enough light to take any when I was finished cutting those 124 squares. Did I mention I cut 124 6" squares?

Today is our anniversary, number 8. He's not home but I did get those pretty flowers today at work, how sweet huh? I think this picture came out MUCH better than that last post of flowers! Whew, that was an old camera! It's the one here at work and a 3-1/2 floppy fits in it. O.L.D. We plan on eating out on Wednesday night, when he comes home. I was also able to change the number of years we've been married on my profile. Won't be long and I'll be up-ping Shelby's age there too. Time certainly does fly by.
Weekend was pretty slow, just hung around the house. I started yet another dish cloth, in a red white and blue and this one will have a star design on it. My next project is going to be a baby afgan for Derricks baby. I'm not going with a pink or blue. I'm sticking with a neutral beige. It's the color she's going with in the baby's room so it's perfect. When I start on that, I'll be sure to post pics. And I don't want to talk about those booties I started...

I recently saw the new Toyota FJ Cruiser. (i know, right here in the berry!) They are the coolest looking SUV on the road I have seen! They have such a vintage look, and I'm all about that. I think this vehicle just moved to the top of my "I'd like a vehicle like..." list. Not sure if I'd go with the Titanium Metallic or the Voodoo Blue. The blue looks so 60s, but who am I kidding, I'm a Silver chick! Hmmm...yea, I definitly think so.

Happy Memorial Day

Before February of 2004, Memorial Day held less significance then the sale that was going on at the Mall. Although I've always felt an appreciation for every service man and woman, being I have uncles that have served in wars before I was born, it just didn't come to a realization till that day in February when Chad got the call to get his affairs in order, he's going to Iraq. He trained for 6 months from Fort Hood, TX to Fort Irwin, CA. He served in Baghdad from Sept 04 - Oct 05. He had leaves here and there in that 18-month period and seeing him was wonderful but it hurt more every time he left. Support was so important for us at the time and we never lacked in that department. From friends to family to people that we didnt even know, everyone reached out their hand to help in whatever way they could. It was a wonderful feeling to know that whatever you were going through at the time, there was always someone thinking of you. It was such an overwhelming sense of pride to know that what we were giving up as a family was not in vain. And I say that because when a soldier leaves to serve his country abroad, his family serves on the home front. We give him up because we, too, feel that feeling that a soldier has to fight for what they believe in. I'll never forget the day that he was leaving to go back from his 2-week leave. He, Shelby and I were sitting in the airport waiting for him to board and with all of our sad faces just staring blankly into space a young guy walked up to us. He looked about our age, he reached out his hand to shake Chad's and said "Hey, man, I just want to say thank you for everything you are doing out there" and just walked off. If tears weren't falling then, let me tell you, they were when that guy walked away. We never knew his name, he wasn't even on the same flight as Chad, and I doubt we will ever see him again, but, he instilled such a sense of pride in us and we knew what we were sacrificing as a family was totally worth it. Just that one simple gesture, made everything seem right, even if it wasnt what we wanted happening in our lives at the moment. And Shelby, can you imagine what it did for her? To see such respect to be given to her father by someone who we didnt even know? Priceless. Something she will remember always. So, on this Memorial Day, by all means partake of the sales, I know I will! But just remember all the service men and women who served in this war and all the wars before for us and for what we have today. Say a prayer for the fallen. If you have the chance, dont pass it up to shake their hand and thank them, and thank their family too.

Yea, So I Knit

I basicly taught myself to knit and with a couple of free classes that were offered at the library, I understand how to do beginner projects. I would consider myself right between beginner and intermediate, leaning more toward the "beginner" side of the spectrum. Like, I can do dishcloths with complete ease. I can whip one up without having to have the pattern right there in front of me. But, not yet seasoned enough to be able to watch tv at the same time though. Must. Have. Eyes. On. Needles. Still not bad for just having *touched* knitting needles just 6 months ago.

When i first found out that Derrick (nephew) was expecting his first baby, images of knitted booties, beanies, and afgans danced in my head. So, my mission now is to condition myself to have booties, a matching beanie and YES an AFGAN (baby size of course) ready for when that baby arrives. Over the weekend I purchased a skein of sport weight yarn in white, what looked like a fairly easy pattern book of nothing but baby booties, and I will attempt to make my first bootie of a pair of booties.

Since, like i said above I consider myself a beginner with just basic knowlege of knitting, I have set myself up at the computer with a awesome online knitting help source. I casted on, knitted 18 stiches, now I have to increase, thats where my knowlege stopped! Pretty sad huh? WISH ME LUCK! So, the picture is a where I am on the first bootie. Those blue booties on the book are hopefully, eventually, through the graces of God are what the finished bootie will look like. See, I'll need the luck! Also, since I can't watch a movie, I put the 70s radio station on TV. Depending on how quick I catch on the "increasing" it could be a long day, hence the coffee! If these booties don't turn out looking like "booties" they may become the practice pair!

Mom and dad hatched some chicks a couple of weeks ago. They are so cute!! Shelby was so excited about them. When we would visit and the chicks would peep, she would say "hmmm...don't you just love that sound?" and when we would would leave, she would say "let me go tell my peeps bye". They're going to paw-paws chicken coop soon. I wanted to take pictures of them little, cute and fluffy but they grow so fast! They are already getting wing feathers. But, I went and took pics anyway. Look at this little guy. You think he was a little upset I was in their space? I mean, he was all up in my lens!

Flower Power Wednesday

Yea, I know, I fibbed. I said I'd post soon with pictures and I didn't. I had you on the edge of your seat, coming to my blog for almost 3 weeks now hoping to find something and there was nothing! My apologies! I've been real busy with other stuff lately and eventually I'll put it out on here.
But, I did get these lovely flowers from my wonderful husband this morning! He stopped by on his way home from the dock to drop these off. Usually, when he gets off on Wednesdays, he'll swing by and bring me flowers to show me how much he's missed me when he was away. How sweet, huh? Yea, I think I'll keep him!
